They are the three racing course types. SCY is short course yards, raced in a 25 yard pool and used across most of the United States. SCM is short course meters, a 25 metre pool used in winter racing in much of the world. LCM is long course meters, the 50 metre Olympic pool. The pool length and its unit change both the distance you swim and how many turns you get.

How do you convert a distance between yards and meters?

Turns and the underwater push-off that follows are among the fastest parts of a race. A 100 in a 25 m pool has three turns; the same 100 in a 50 m pool has only one. Fewer turns means more time spent swimming on the surface, which is slower than gliding off a wall — so long-course times run a bit behind short-course times for the same swimmer. This tool does not model that gap; it converts on pace alone.
