What drives the burn
Swimming is one of the most complete forms of exercise — it loads the whole body while the water supports your joints. Three things move the calorie number: how hard the stroke works you, given by its MET value; how much of you there is to move, given by body weight; and how long you keep going. The MET model combines all three into a per-minute rate and multiplies by your time in the water.

How are swimming calories estimated?
The calculator uses the MET method, the standard way exercise energy is estimated. Each activity has a MET value — a multiple of your resting metabolism — and the burn is MET × 3.5 × your body mass in kilograms ÷ 200, per minute. So a heavier swimmer, a harder stroke, and more time in the water all raise the total. Enter your details and it multiplies through for the whole swim.
Which stroke burns the most calories?
Butterfly is by far the most demanding, with a MET value near 13.8 for hard swimming, because it works the whole body against the water on every cycle. Breaststroke and vigorous freestyle sit in the 9 to 10 range, and backstroke a little below. At an easy, moderate effort the differences shrink. This tool carries a moderate and a vigorous value for each of the four competitive strokes.
Why is my number different from my watch or the pool machine?
Every calorie figure is an estimate. MET tables are population averages; your real burn depends on technique, how much you glide, water temperature, body composition, and true effort, none of which a formula can see. A swim watch adds heart-rate data but still guesses. Treat any single number as a ballpark and look at the trend across similar swims instead.
Does swimming in cold water burn more?
It can. The body spends extra energy maintaining core temperature in cool water, and open-water swimmers often report a bigger appetite than the stroke alone would explain. That thermal cost is not captured in a MET value, so a cold open-water swim may burn somewhat more than the estimate here. The effect varies a lot between people and is hard to quantify.
