What is a SWOLF score?

SWOLF — a blend of swimming and golf — is your stroke count for a pool length added to the number of seconds it took. Take 16 strokes and 20 seconds to cover a length and your SWOLF is 36. Like golf, a lower score is better: it means you moved the same distance with fewer strokes, less time, or both. It is a simple proxy for stroke efficiency.

Why does pool length change the score, and how do I compare?

SWOLF is measured over one length, so a 50 m length naturally has roughly double the strokes and time of a 25 m length, and a larger raw score. To compare fairly, this tool normalises to a 25 m reference by scaling the raw score by 25 divided by the pool length in metres. A 72 over 50 m becomes a comparable 36 per 25 m.

What is a good SWOLF score?

For 25 m freestyle, many competitive swimmers sit in the low 30s, fit club swimmers around the mid-30s, and developing lap swimmers in the 40s and above. But SWOLF is deeply personal — a tall swimmer with a long reach will score lower than a shorter swimmer at the same speed, and each stroke has its own range. How do I lower my SWOLF?

Improve distance per stroke without slowing down: a stronger catch and better body position let you cover more water per pull, so your stroke count falls while your time holds.
