Around 4,000 people die from drowning in the United States each year, according to the American Red Cross. And for children under five years old, it’s estimated that 87% of drowning deaths happen in home pools or hot tubs. More than two out of three children who drown in pools were not expected to be swimming in them. Often, they were out of sight for less than five minutes before drowning, according to the Red Cross.
The nonprofit also emphasizes the importance of teaching children about water safety. This includes teaching them about the dangers of drowning, the importance of never swimming alone, and the use of flotation devices. The nonprofit advocates for the use of pool alarms and other safety features to enhance pool safety. Pool alarms can be triggered by a child entering the pool, a child falling into the pool, or even a pool cover being lifted.
